Jah9 '9' album review

On the ninth day of the ninth month (September), Jah9 released her new album, 9. 9 has nine tracks all produced or co-produced by Jah9 herself. The bold move sees the jazz-on-dub poet/singer take a crucial step towards artistic independence.

Nine is seen as the number of change, because after nine a new cycle begins. The album is a spiritually-fulfilling experience. Jah9's lyrics enrich faith in positive movements, meditation and livity. In addition to prevailing Rasta themes, most of the roots reggae riddims feature traditional Rastafarian drumming and set at a slower meditative groove.

The nine track album is diverse, covering a variety of subjects. First off, the set opens with the spiritually-charged single 'Humble Mi'. 'Prosper' follows, featuring the powerful statement "When you do it with your heart and prosper. Do it with just a part and fail," in the chorus.

'Unafraid' is by title as it is in action, Jah9 takes direct aim at sexual abusers and acts as a call to protect the young people. While it may be considered controversial to some, recent cases in the world show abuse is a prevalent problem in society which mustn't be a taboo. She tackles the brave subject responsibly as one would expect. What makes it more compelling is that it's reportedly based on an incident involving her nephew.

Overall, the latter half is more reflective and chilled. 'In The Midst' is a celebration of spiritual self-awareness. 'Natural Vibe' has a little about physical, but is mainly about mental and spiritual attraction to her lover. Vulnerability is on display on 'Baptised' - a haunting song in which she delivers her best vocal performance and laid lush harmonies.

If it wasn't already obvious, Jah9 is deeply spiritual in understanding, reasoning and way she observes. Concluding the album is 'Greatest Threat to the Status Quo' - a collaboration with Midnite's Vaughn Benjamin. "A spiritual woman is the greatest threat to the status quo" acts as a fitting statement to complete the album.
